“I have a brain tumor,” I moaned. It could be the only explanation for the amount of pain radiating from my skull. What did I do? My memory was just as fuzzy as my tongue. I couldn’t even remember how I got into bed.

I pried my eyes open and glanced at the alarm clock on my bedside table to see what time of day it was, but a glass of water and a bottle of aspirin blocked my view. Forcing myself into a sitting position, I gratefully took the pain reliever and prayed it would be fast-acting. I shuffled to the bathroom and tripped on my sweater and jeans laying on the floor. That’s odd; I don’t usually get undressed in the bathroom.

Once showered and dressed in yoga pants and a hoodie, I wandered out of my room, following the scent of coffee and the sound of Jakey giggling. I started to thank Nate for making coffee when I entered the living room and came to a complete stop. Adam was playing on the game system with all three kids. Though Nate had been increasingly uptight when Adam was around, he seemed slightly less grumbly and appeared to be enjoying the game they were playing.

Adam was stretched out on the floor with a laughing Jakey on his lap. The sound of Jakey’s happiness brought a smile to my face. Claire leaned against Adam’s shoulder and Nate relaxed in the big chair, his fingers nimbly attacking the buttons on his controller.

Nate glanced at me for a split second. “It wasn’t me. Adam made it.”

Adam shrugged his shoulder and kept his eyes on me.

“Hey,” I mumbled, feeling unexpectedly shy around him. I squinted as I tried to remember anything from last night. I caught flashes of Brad with his shirt off; me with my shirt off; Adam on his motorcycle; throwing up on the side of the road.

Awesome.

“How are you feeling?” Adam asked, lifting Jakey off his lap.

“Oh, you know, the usual post-drunk humiliation.”

He chuckled, easing the slightly anxious feeling in my chest. Maybe it wasn’t as bad as I thought if he’s laughing about it.

He said, “How about I get you some coffee and make you some breakfast?”

“Just coffee. I’m not sure I could keep anything down right now.”

Adam followed me into the kitchen, pulled out a stool for me, and filled two mugs with coffee on the other side of the counter. I watched him as he moved around my kitchen, knowing exactly where everything was located. He slid my favorite mug in front of me and leaned against the counter across from me, sipping from his own mug.

“So...” I had a few questions about last night, but I wasn’t sure where to start.

“So,” Adam repeated. Apparently, he wasn’t either.

“You’re here,” I stated.

“Yes,” he said with a slight curve to his lips.

Way to state the obvious, Anna.

“What embarrassing things did I say last night?” Might as well rip the Band-Aid off now.

“If you don’t remember, I’m not going to tell you.
